Overview

In the beginning there were stories. Stories of girls and women and men and Love. So when she meets him, she knows the script and she’s ready. But things are starting to go wrong and the stories she’s been told don’t serve her anymore. She doesn’t fit the role. She needs to rewrite her part. So she can be seen. Be brave. Take a breath.

There is a light and whistle for attracting attention is a bold, exciting and powerful piece of original theatre from Henri Merriam. Its frank depiction of a relationship fraught with gaslighting and abuse is done in a dynamic, surreal and ultimately empowering way.

When considering the sound design for the show, I wanted to aid the temporal shifts which come as we jump from childhood flashbacks to fourth wall breaking analysis of realtime events. Delicate ambiences and atmospheres transport the audience to a variety of locations, and original composition soundtracks her darkest moments as she reckons with compulsions to count the contents of the drawer.
